The Midnight Visitor Summary

“The Midnight Visitor” is a short story by Robert Arthur that features an unlikely hero named Ausable, a secret agent. The story is a thrilling and humorous account of how Ausable, who is depicted as somewhat unfit and ordinary for a spy, outwits a dangerous enemy, Max.

Summary:
Ausable is expecting a crucial report to be delivered to him in his hotel room, but when he enters, he finds a man named Max holding a gun. Max demands the report, which contains important information. Despite the tension, Ausable remains calm and collected. He cleverly invents a story about a balcony outside his window, which he claims is often used by intruders.

Max, believing the story, prepares to escape through this supposed balcony when there’s a knock at the door. Ausable says it must be the police, whom he had arranged for protection. Max panics and decides to hide on the “balcony” outside the window.

As soon as Max leaps out of the window, it is revealed that there was no balcony at all—Max falls to his death. The person knocking at the door turns out to be the waiter bringing Ausable’s drink, not the police. Ausable, using his wit and quick thinking, manages to get rid of Max without any violence, making him an unexpected and unconventional hero.

Key Points:
Ausable’s Character: He is initially described as an unimpressive and clumsy spy, but he proves to be resourceful and intelligent.
Max’s Mistake: Max underestimates Ausable and falls victim to his clever deception.
Theme: The story highlights the importance of intelligence and presence of mind over physical strength in critical situations.
Humor: Despite the suspense, the story is laced with humor, especially in the way Ausable deals with the situation.
