Answer: Ausable is different from typical secret agents. He lived in a small, dull room on the top floor of an old French hotel, was overweight, and struggled with French and German despite living in Paris for over twenty years. Unlike the usual secret agents, he received routine phone calls instead of secret messages from beautiful women.
He dealt with Max by cleverly making up stories that tricked Max into a situation that led to his downfall.

Question 1.‘Ausable did not fit any description of a secret agent Fowler had ever read.” What do secret agents in books and films look like, in your opinion? Discuss in groups or in class some stories or movies featuring spies, detectives and secret agents, and compare their appearance with that of Ausable in this story. (You may mention characters from fiction in languages other than English. In English fiction you may have come across Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, or Miss Marple. Have you watched any movies featuring James Bond?)
Answer: Secret agents in fiction are often portrayed as “tall, dark, and handsome.” They are usually fit, surrounded by beautiful women, and known for smoking a pipe (like Sherlock Holmes) or performing dangerous stunts (like James Bond). James Bond movies, for example, show him using advanced gadgets to fight villains.
However, not all secret agents look like this. For example, Feluda, a character created by the famous Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray, was a tall, athletic detective known for his sharp analytical skills and keen observation, rather than flashy gadgets or stunts.
Question 2. How does Ausable manage to make Max believe that there is a balcony attached to his room? Look back at his detailed description of it. What makes it a convincing story?
Answer: Ausable convinces Max there’s a balcony by describing how his office was once part of a larger apartment with a balcony connected to the next room. He even adds that someone had broken into his office through that balcony before. Ausable’s quick thinking and calmness in a tense situation make the story believable.
Question 3.Looking back at the story, when do you think Ausable thought up his plan for getting rid of Max? Do you think he had worked out his plan in detail right from the beginning? Or did he make up a plan taking advantage of events as they happened?
Answer: No, I don’t think Ausable had a detailed plan from the beginning. He made up the plan as things happened. He invented the story about the balcony and, when there was a knock at the door, he said it was the police. This made Max panic, and he jumped out of the window without checking.

Question 1.In this story, Ausable shows great ‘presence of mind’, or the ability to think quickly and act calmly and wisely, in a situation of danger and surprise. Give examples from your own experience, or narrate a story, which shows someone’s presence of mind.
Answer: This story is from the play “If I Were You.” In it, Gerrard is held hostage by a criminal. Instead of panicking, Gerrard stays calm and confident, treating the criminal like a guest. He convinces the criminal that the police are after him and that he should escape through an exit door, which is actually a cupboard door. The criminal falls for the trick and ends up trapped in the cupboard.
