Summary of A Letter To God

“A Letter to God” is a story by Gregorio Lopez y Fuentes that shows the deep faith of a poor farmer named Lencho.

Summary:
Lencho is a hardworking farmer who lives with his family in the countryside. He is looking forward to a good harvest from his crops, which are the only way he can earn money to feed his family. But one day, a terrible hailstorm destroys all of his crops. Lencho and his family are left with nothing to eat or sell, and they are worried about their future.

Despite the disaster, Lencho has strong faith in God. He believes that God will help him in his time of need. So, he writes a letter to God, asking for 100 pesos (a type of money) to replant his crops and support his family. He addresses the letter directly to God and goes to the post office to mail it.

The postmaster at the post office is surprised and touched by Lencho’s faith. He wants to help, so he collects money from the other workers, but they can only gather 70 pesos. The postmaster puts the money in an envelope and writes “God” on it before sending it to Lencho.

When Lencho receives the letter, he is happy at first, thinking God has answered his prayer. But when he counts the money and finds only 70 pesos, he becomes angry. He believes that the post office workers must have stolen the missing 30 pesos. Lencho then writes another letter to God, asking Him to send the rest of the money directly, and not through the post office, because he thinks the workers are thieves.

Key Points:
Lencho’s Faith: Lencho truly believes that God will help him, no matter what happens.
Irony: Lencho doesn’t realize that the post office workers helped him, and instead, he thinks they stole from him.
Kindness: The postmaster and his coworkers try to help Lencho because they feel sorry for him.
Innocence: Lencho’s strong faith is both admirable and a bit sad because he doesn’t understand who really helped him.
